The counselor of Rural Environment and Agricultural Policy, Marcelino Marcos, announced this Tuesday that he will present a proposal to establish a total ban on salmon in 2027, with the aim of promoting the recovery of the species in the Asturian rivers. Fishing activity will only be allowed in each basin until the capture of the "Campanu," that is, the first salmon of the season in each river system, and the authorized extractions for reproduction and restocking purposes will be maintained.
Marcos has indicated that he will transfer this proposal to the Council of Aquatic Ecosystems and Fishing in Fresh Waters as an option based on the principle of "precaution" and on the available scientific and technical information regarding the historical evolution of salmon. "The recovery of the species needs stability, time, and reduction of mortality," the counselor emphasized to explain the necessity of this measure.
