CC.OO. plans to open in the coming days a round of contacts with the different groups of the Parliament with the aim of reactivating the Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP) registered years ago in the Catalan Chamber to ensure that 6% of GDP is allocated to Education.

The announcement was made by the general secretary of the Education federation of the union, Edu Núñez, accompanied by the spokesperson of CC.OO. Educació, Ester Vila, and the head of Union Action and Collective Bargaining, Cristina Broto, in statements to the media in front of the Parliament this Tuesday.

Núñez warned that education "has a chronic and structural problem" and emphasized that it requires more resources to deploy inclusive schooling and attention to diversity, dignify infrastructures, and adapt centers to climate change.

In this sense, he recalled that the ILP was promoted together with more than 50 entities from the social and educational sphere and with more than 50,000 signatures, "with the support of the councils of all cities in Catalunya with more than 50,000 inhabitants" and the backing of public centers and 'consells escolars'.

The union has launched a new campaign to boost the parliamentary processing of the initiative, a day after the president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, reiterated that his commitment is that in the debate on the future of the educational system it includes "now yes, reaching the 6% of public investment" set by the education law approved by the Parliament in 2009 and that has never been fulfilled in the Budgets of the Generalitat.

Questioned about whether the opening of the debate on Education raised by Illa could delay the approval of the ILP, Núñez considered that it will not be a brake, but rather, on the contrary, "it is good" to address both issues together.

"We need it to be approved now"

The campaign presented by CC.OO. is aimed at the entire educational community and, at the same time, at the whole of Catalan citizenship. The central axis is a QR code printed on the posters that the union will distribute in different spaces.

By scanning the QR, one will access a webpage where dice can be rolled that, randomly, will select a deputy to whom an email will be sent requesting their support for the approval of the ILP.

"It is very simple, we ask everyone to do this act in order to send mass emails because we need it to be approved. We have made a very long journey of four years, it has been an ant's work of drafting the law that we considered needed to be brought," said the head of Trade Union Action, Cristina Broto.

Stable and long-term investments

Ester Vila has emphasized that with the effective application of 6% of GDP in Education, investments in the educational system can be reinforced, infrastructures can be modernized, and the necessary resources can be ensured "after many years of underfunding."

As she explained, "what we will do with the ILP will be to ensure that they are structural, that is, to safeguard a high-quality public system as Catalunya deserves and to accelerate and improve the proposals that come from the agreements signed by CC.OO. this last year."
