James Paul Gracey is a 21-year-old American student, a native of Illinois and a student at the University of Alabama. He was in Europe for spring break and was scheduled to return to the United States this very weekend.
The individual had arrived in Barcelona after passing through Amsterdam and was staying in a tourist apartment. According to their circle, they are a profile without a history of risk: athletic, responsible, and very close to their family.
His/Her disappearance, therefore, completely breaks with his/her usual behavior. And that has raised concern from the first moment.
The last time he was seen: a night in Shöko
The key point of the case is on the early morning of Tuesday, March 17.
Gracey went out with friends in the area of Vila Olímpica and ended up at the Shöko nightclub, one of the best-known venues facing the sea.
He was last seen between 03:00 and 04:0, he separated from the group inside or upon leaving the venue. Since that moment, nothing more has been heard from him
This last movement -to remain alone- is one of the elements that has the most weight now in the investigation.
The key clue: his/her wallet appears in the sea
The case took an important turn when the Mossos d’Esquadra located Gracey's wallet floating in the water.
This finding has changed the focus of the investigation.
From that moment, the maritime search has been activated, aquatic and underwater units have been deployed, and drones are being used in the coastal area
The sea has become the main scenario of search.
What the Mossos are investigating: the main hypotheses
The Catalan police works with several open lines, but there is one especially relevant.
The security cameras have confirmed that Gracey did not leave the nightclub alone. However, it has not been possible to clearly identify the person or persons who accompanied him.
From there, the hypotheses are:
- Accident: fall into the sea in the promenade area
- Disorientation or intoxication after the party night
- Interaction with still unidentified third parties
- For now, no hypothesis is ruled out.
The role of the mobile: a key unknown
One of the most disconcerting elements of the case is the young man's mobile phone.
The Mossos have confirmed that it is in their possession, but they have not explained in what circumstances it was found.
This detail is key.
The mobile can provide:
- Exact location in the last hours
- Recent contacts
- Reconstruction of the route
But it also opens new questions about what exactly happened after leaving the nightclub.
The family, between United States and Barcelona
At more than 7,000 kilometers, Gracey's family lives the situation as a nightmare. Part of her family members have already moved to Barcelona, where they actively collaborate in the search:
“It is completely out of place that he has not given signs of life,” his circle has indicated. That total absence of contact is, for the investigators, one of the most worrying indicators.
