The president of PSC-Units in the Parliament, Ferran Pedret, has lashed out against the narrative that, in his opinion, certain parties are spreading about security in Catalonia after the latest violent episodes. In direct allusion to Vox and Aliança Catalana, he has warned that "the engineers of hate are trying to provoke a new Torre-Pacheco".
In a press conference this Tuesday in the Catalan Chamber, he admitted that "objectively there has been a concentration of serious criminal acts in a relatively short period of time and, therefore, citizen alarm is understandable. Alarmism is another matter."
Pedret has defended that the response of the Generalitat and the central Government in terms of security "is a diligent attitude", and has given as an example operations such as 'Pla Kanpai' and the agreement to increase the staff of the Mossos d'Esquadra to 25,000 agents by 2030.
He has remarked that, beyond the social concern that the weekend's events may generate, "it is that of people trying to feed fear and hatred to obtain electoral gain" that he considers truly worrying.
According to what he has added, "the far-right forces, especially Aliança Catalana and Vox, as well as other minority and extra-parliamentary ones, play at this. And they do it very consciously".
Committee on the Status of the Deputy
When asked about the files that the Deputy's Statute Commission still has on its table to analyze possible violations of the Code of Conduct, Pedret pointed out that a "more than reasonable" time has already passed to address them.
In relation to the case of the Vox deputy Alberto Tarradas, who threatened to deport the ERC deputy Najat Driouech, he has censured that this direct threat, which he considers very serious and premeditated, actually sought to "intimidate the citizens of Catalonia who have diverse origins".
"The message it conveyed is: if we dare to tell a congresswoman in a parliamentary setting that she has nationality, solely because of her origin, that she can be deported, what won't we do to you who are covering walls or working in the underground economy," he argued.
Pedret has shown himself to be in favor of convening the meeting proposed by the Comuns to discuss with the "democratic parliamentary groups" the acceleration and intensification of hate speech in the Parliament, as well as to study an eventual reform of the regulations.
Detention of the Flotilla Members
Lastly, he explained that PSC-Units supports the demand for "immediate release" of the Palestinian-Spanish activist Saif Abukeshek and the rest of the Flotilla members.
Pedret has demanded that the European Union get involved in the Government's diplomatic efforts to secure the release of the activists "detained after being arrested at sea and against international law".
