The disappearance and subsequent discovery of the body of James Gracey, a 20-year-old American man who was on vacation in Barcelona, has had a strong media echo both in Spain and in the United States. His profile -university student, traveling during spring break- and the rapid mobilization of his family contributed to the case gaining international relevance in a matter of hours.
For several days, the uncertainty about what happened kept various hypotheses open. However, the progress of the investigation has allowed to narrow down the scenario with greater precision.
The cameras reconstruct the last minutes
The images captured by the security cameras of the area near the Olympic Port have been decisive. According to investigation sources, the videos show the young man walking alone in the direction of the pier during the early morning.
In those same images, it is observed how he/she falls into the water without any other person appearing in the sequence. This element has been key for the investigators to rule out, for the moment, the participation of third parties in what happened.
The exact spot is located in the vicinity of Somorrostro beach, an area with nighttime traffic but also with less visible sections.
Discovery of the body and progress of the autopsy
The body was located by the search teams at about four meters deep, after several days of searching in the area. In parallel, the institute of legal medicine of Catalonia is carrying out the autopsy to accurately determine the causes of death.
Sources close to the investigation indicate that, awaiting the definitive forensic report, the current indications are compatible with an accidental fall.
The previous hours and the missing mobile
Gracey had been in the city for several days and had gone out the previous night with friends. The last clear reference is around three in the morning, when she is lost track of after leaving a nightclub in the area.
During the search, the police located his mobile phone in the hands of a third person who claimed to have found it. The investigators consider that this fact does not bear a direct relation to the fall into the sea.

The combination of factors -youth, international context and lack of answers in the first hours- turned the case into one of the most followed in recent days.
