The jury court of the Provincial Court of Barcelona has issued a verdict of not guilty in favor of the man accused of killing his neighbor in the Catalan capital in 2019, according to the sentence signed by the presiding judge of the jury court and consulted by Europa Press.
The Prosecutor's Office had classified the events as a crime of aggravated murder and requested a sentence of 17 years in prison for the accused, his disqualification, and the payment of compensation of 535,000 euros to the victim's relatives, understanding that he took his life after accessing the interior of his home on the morning of November 16, 2019.
However, the jury members have considered it not proven that the accused maintained a debt with his neighbor, nor that on that day he entered his home and assaulted him with the intention of causing his death.
"The jury has reached a verdict of not guilty unanimously, concluding that, while the victim's violent death is proven, there is insufficient or conclusive evidence linking the defendant to the commission of the crime," the ruling states.
Consequently, the presiding judge of the jury court has decreed the acquittal of the defendant in a ruling that is not yet final and against which an appeal can be filed before the Civil and Criminal Chamber of the High Court of Justice of Catalonia.
