The total solar eclipse on Wednesday, August 12, can be observed from a good part of Spain, although looking directly at the star without proper protection can cause serious and irreversible damage to the retina. The reduction of ambient light does not eliminate solar radiation nor does it make it safe to look at the Sun without specific filters.
Authorities recommend using exclusively glasses designed for direct solar observation. Ordinary sunglasses, X-rays, smoked glasses, compact discs, and other homemade filters do not offer sufficient protection.
Why glasses are needed to see the eclipse
During an eclipse, the lower ambient light can cause the pupil to dilate and the observer to feel less discomfort when looking at the Sun. However, ultraviolet, visible, and infrared radiation continues to reach the eye.
This exposure can cause solar retinopathy, a retinal injury that can appear without immediate pain. The first symptoms can take several hours to manifest and include blurred vision, dark spots, or alterations in the center of the visual field.
Protection must be maintained during all partial phases. One can only look without glasses during the brief period when the Sun is completely obscured by the Moon and as long as the observer is within the path of totality.
Why sunglasses are not effective
Conventional sunglasses are intended to reduce everyday glare, but they are not designed to look directly at the Sun. Although they darken visible light, they can allow dangerous levels of ultraviolet and infrared radiation to pass through.
Telescopes, binoculars, or cameras with eclipse glasses placed in front of the eyes should also not be used. These devices concentrate radiation and require specific solar filters installed at the front of the instrument.
How to know if eclipse glasses are certified
Safe glasses must clearly indicate that they meet the EN ISO 12312-2:2015 standard, specific for filters intended for direct observation of the Sun. ISO 12312-1 corresponds to general use sunglasses and is not valid for observing an eclipse.
In the European Union, they must also bear the CE marking, backed by laboratory testing and manufacturer documentation. The mere presence of the symbol printed does not guarantee that the product is authentic.
Before using them, check:
- That the reference EN ISO 12312-2:2015 is included.
- That the manufacturer, instructions, and usage warnings are present.
- That the filter does not have scratches, perforations, bends, stains, or lighter areas.
- That the frame properly covers both eyes and keeps the filter securely in place.
- That they include the CE marking if purchased in the EU.
When wearing them, the environment should appear almost black and only the solar disc should be distinguishable. This check can help detect clearly inadequate filters, but does not replace certification or laboratory tests.
Where to get free glasses for the eclipse
The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the ONCE Social Group will distribute two million certified glasses for free for the eclipse on August 12. Distribution began during the week of August 3 through ONCE vendors, both at kiosks and at their usual sales points.
The units will be delivered while supplies last. ONCE will provide the glasses and adapt educational materials to facilitate access to information for people with disabilities.
The Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology will distribute another 300,000 glasses among research centers, universities, scientific museums, and public entities. Among the announced spaces are:

Where to get free glasses in Madrid
The City Council of Madrid distributes special glasses for free between July 17 and August 12 in various municipal spaces. The announced points include:
- Planetarium of Madrid.
- History Museum of Madrid.
- San Isidro Museum.
- Municipal Printing-House-Arts of the Book.
- Conde Duque.
- Network of municipal libraries.
The distribution will continue until stocks run out. Some centers may have already finished their units, so it is advisable to check availability before going.
Where to buy glasses for the solar eclipse 2026
The glasses can be purchased at specialized astronomy stores, opticians, pharmacies, some supermarkets, and e-commerce platforms. The National Geographic Institute also offers certified products through sales points and the store of the National Center for Geographic Information.
The purchase on a known platform does not guarantee by itself that the glasses are safe. The buyer must check the labeling, the identity of the manufacturer, the certification, and the condition of the filter, especially when it comes to external sellers.
How to properly use the glasses
The glasses should be put on before looking up at the Sun and removed only after taking the gaze away. The National Geographic Institute recommends not to observe for more than one minute in a row, even with certified protection, and to take breaks between each observation.
Minors must use them under the supervision of an adult. They should also not be used if the filter is damaged, detaches from the frame, or does not cover the entire field of vision.
Those who do not have glasses can resort to indirect methods, such as a pinhole camera, a pinhole projection, or the image projected through the small holes of a strainer. These methods allow following the partial phases without looking directly at the Sun.
