During the greeting to the journalists accompanying the visit, Leo XIV not only highlighted the importance of this tour to meet the faithful and celebrate the faith, but also joked about his football fandom. The pontiff confessed that, although the Church belongs to all teams, he feels a special sympathy for Real Madrid, eliciting smiles from those present and adding a close and human touch to the official reception.

Leo XIV's visit to Spain will extend from June 6 to 12, with stops in Barcelona and the Canary Islands, but the first days in Madrid include key events, such as large masses, meetings with political and religious authorities, and social visits to centers for vulnerable people.
The pontiff's football nod has been interpreted by some experts as a gesture to connect with society and create a bond with young people and sports fans, reinforcing the idea that this visit seeks an open and close dialogue with all citizens, beyond the strictly religious.
