A trip marked by Madrid, Barcelona, the Canary Islands, and major social messages

Leo XIV's visit to Spain took place between June 6 and 12 and had several stages of strong symbolic weight. Madrid concentrated the institutional and pastoral start of the trip, with events at the Royal Palace, Plaza de Lima, Cibeles, the Congress of Deputies, the Episcopal Conference, the Almudena, the Santiago Bernabéu, and the Movistar Arena.

Afterwards, the Pope traveled to Barcelona and Montserrat, with speeches at the Cathedral, the Olympic Stadium, Brians 1, the Abbey of Montserrat, the church of Sant Agustí, and the Sagrada Família.

The last part of the trip took Leo XIV to the Canary Islands, where the migratory issue acquired central importance. There he met with migrant reception realities in Arguineguín, Las Raíces, and La Laguna, in addition to presiding over celebrations in Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

What addresses are included

The document brings together the Pope's main interventions during his trip to Spain, including his institutional speeches, homilies, greetings, and pastoral messages.

Among the most notable texts are his words to the authorities, civil society, and the diplomatic corps in Madrid; the vigil with young people in Plaza de Lima; the mass in Cibeles; the speech at the ‘Tejer Redes’ meeting with the world of culture, art, economy, and sports; the address to the members of the Spanish Parliament; the greeting to the bishops of Spain; the prayer at the Almudena; the meeting with the diocesan community at the Bernabéu; and his interventions in Barcelona, Montserrat, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife.

Messages related to migrants, volunteers, realities of charity, religious communities, and liturgical celebrations that marked the second half of the journey are also included.

The Pope's Speech at Congress

One of the most relevant texts of the trip was the speech by Leo XIV at the Congress of Deputies. Before the representatives of the State institutions, the Pope focused his speech on the dignity of the person, the common good, public responsibility, and democratic coexistence.

The Pontiff argued that legislative life must always ask itself what idea of the person inspires the laws and what kind of society is being built with them. It was one of the speeches with the greatest political resonance of the entire visit, not for entering into partisan confrontation, but for placing public action before an ethical demand.

The 'Tejer Redes' Message at the Movistar Arena

Another of the most commented moments was the 'Tejer Redes' meeting at the Movistar Arena in Madrid. There Leo XIV addressed the world of culture, education, business, sports, and technology.

His message revolved around a fundamental idea: a society cannot be content with being more efficient if it loses sight of the human. The Pope called for culture to safeguard memory and foster dialogue, for education to promote the search for truth, for business to recognize the dignity of the worker, and for technological progress to take into account the poor, the elderly, and those without a voice.

That speech connected with the interventions of Antonio Banderas, Sara Baras, Carolina Marín, Teresa Perales, businessmen and unions, and turned the event into one of the most powerful social images of the trip.

Cibeles, Youth, and Bernabéu: Madrid's Major Events

Madrid was the main initial stage of the visit. At Plaza de Lima, Leo XIV addressed the youth with a message of hope, vocation, and commitment. At Cibeles, he presided over a massive Mass that brought together thousands of faithful in the center of the capital.

The meeting with the diocesan community at the Santiago Bernabéu completed the most popular part of the Madrid agenda. There the Pope once again insisted on the need for a close Church, capable of listening, accompanying, and sustaining real bonds in a time of social fragmentation.

Barcelona, Montserrat, and the Sagrada Família

The Catalan leg of the trip had a strong spiritual, cultural, and social component. In Barcelona, Leo XIV participated in prayer services and pastoral meetings before traveling to Montserrat, one of the places of greatest symbolic value for Catholicism in Spain.

The Sagrada Família was another of the trip's major highlights. There, the Pope delivered a homily marked by beauty, faith, human suffering, and the responsibility not to abandon those suffering the consequences of war, poverty, or exclusion.

The passage through Barcelona and Montserrat reinforced one of the key themes of the entire trip: lthe connection between spiritual heritage, culture, memory, and social commitment.

Canary Islands and the message on migrants

The last part of the trip took Leo XIV to Gran Canaria and Tenerife, where the migratory discourse acquired special relevance.

In Arguineguín, Las Raíces, and La Laguna, the Pope encountered realities of welcoming and integrating migrants. His words positioned migration as one of the great moral, social, and political challenges of our time.

Leo XIV appealed for welcome, dignity, integration, and shared responsibility, without ignoring the complexity of the migratory phenomenon. It was one of the most significant blocks of the visit and one that leaves the most European interpretation after its passage through Spain.
