The PPdeG has halted, thanks to its absolute majority, a non-binding proposal registered by the BNG in the Parliament of Galicia and supported by the PSOE, which asked the Xunta to speak out against Israel's "genocide" of the Palestinian population and against the treatment by the Israeli State of the activists of the Global Sumud Flotilla, including several Galicians.
The BNG's proposal, which this Tuesday incorporated a self-amendment to "complete" the initial text, was defended in the plenary session by nationalist deputy Iria Taibo. In its operative part, it called on the Xunta to condemn Israel's "illegal attack" against the Flotilla in international waters and the "genocide," as well as to focus on the "abuses, aggressions, and torture" suffered by the activists.
The position of the popular group, which voted against, was presented by parliamentarian Katy Varela. The deputy defended the need to promote "dialogue, international cooperation, and peaceful solutions," and stressed that "when there is a war or a conflict, one must mediate and not add fuel to the fire."
Next, she insisted that the PPdeG has "no problem condemning acts contrary to human rights and international law," and gave as an example that they censure "Israel's disproportionate response to Hamas's terrorist attack" in 2023. However, she criticized that their political adversaries "always forget to talk about what the other side does."
In this regard, she rejected the nationalists' amendment that updated the text, considering that it seeks to "generate more controversy and more confrontation" instead of "following the guidelines of the international community."
For her part, socialist Paloma Castro confirmed that her group would support the Bloc's proposal "without hesitation." Iria Taibo thanked this support and also that of the activists who, she emphasized, "put their bodies on the line" to make visible "the murders that the State of Israel continues to commit with impunity."
"The amendment has been submitted in due time and form," added Taibo, who interpreted the popular deputy's words as "a lack of respect" towards the activists. Likewise, she maintained that she does not see "the problem" in the Xunta, as an institution, being able to "condemn the genocide and Israel's illegal and illegitimate actions."
Other proposals rejected by the PPdeG majority
In the same session, the votes of the PPdeG also blocked another initiative by the BNG that asked the Xunta to promote the transfer of the Ourense railway freight station to the municipality of San Cibrao das Viñas.
After the debate, the PP of Ourense sent a statement in which it regretted that the Bloque chose to reject the popular amendment proposed to "reinforce the initiative" and "thus direct the claim towards those who currently have the real responsibility to act, Adif and the Government of Spain".
Likewise, a proposal from the socialist group focused on the application, in the sports field, of the new meteorological alert protocol was rejected.
