The Spanish technology group GMV has been chosen to act as a beneficiary in seven projects within the 2025 call for the European Defence Fund (EDF), "consolidating its role as a key player in the development of critical capabilities for Europe's security and technological autonomy".
The company will take part in "key" initiatives in areas such as space, air combat, cyber defense, and soldier systems, "thereby reinforcing its commitment to technological autonomy and European cooperation," according to a statement released this Monday.
In particular, GMV will contribute its technology to several projects, among which "Spider 2" stands out, an initiative that continues the feasibility study carried out in a previous stage and focuses on the development of affordable, multi-mission satellite constellations for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR).
Protecting satellites in hostile environments
Another of the proposals is "Asimov", whose purpose is, through the integration of civil and military developments, to define, design, and validate a federated architecture for operations in orbit, capable of refueling, repairing, inspecting, and protecting satellites in adverse conditions.
Likewise, "ECC2" is oriented towards the field of cyber defense and aims to develop a sovereign and federated command and control (C2) solution in cyberspace, while "Eicacs 2" prolongs the work initiated in previous calls with the goal of providing European air forces with collaborative combat capabilities based on interoperability standards.
In parallel, the DART initiative proposes an innovative approach to address the growing complexity of air combat systems, while "Achile 2" drives the evolution of existing developments to turn the new generation soldier system into an open, modular, and interoperable architecture.
Increase mission effectiveness and safety
Lastly, the "Epiic 2" project progresses in technologies applicable to next-generation aircraft cockpits, eliminating current limitations and allowing pilots to concentrate on tactical leadership and critical mission actions, thereby increasing operational effectiveness and crew safety.
GMV underlines that the European Defence Fund, the European Union's (EU) main tool for promoting cooperation in defence research and development, "evidences in its 2025 call the breadth and ambition of the community's investment effort in critical capabilities". The 57 selected projects – with Spanish presence in 42 of them – cover areas such as artificial intelligence, cyber defence, drones and anti-drone systems, with the aim of keeping the EU at the forefront of technology.
In total, the call involves 634 entities from 26 member states and mobilizes an investment of 675 million euros in capacity development and 332 million in research. In this framework, GMV's participation "reinforces its positioning within the European defense ecosystem, where it already has a consolidated track record in cooperation programs such as EDF and EDIDP".
With an accumulated total of 49 projects, GMV remains among the companies leading the contribution to the program and continues to bet on the design of advanced technological solutions that support a more secure, resilient, and strategically independent Europe.
