The Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda has announced the selection of 174 projects from a total of 711 applications submitted for the XIV Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism (BIAU), which will take place in Brasilia (Brazil) from November 3 to 7, 2026.
As the department pointed out this Wednesday, the BIAU, whose motto will be 'Caring for Life', is conceived as "a space for reflection on the contemporary transformations of the territory" and proposes a "deep review" of the role of architecture and urbanism in the face of current challenges.
"The relationship between architecture, water, and vegetation, the need for housing, and the emergence of new urban and territorial scenarios will be some of the axes that will articulate the exhibitions, meetings, and debates of this edition," the Ministry's press release indicated.
The jury responsible for the selection has been formed by the curatorial team of the program and by reference institutional representatives, including the Secretary General of Urban Agenda and Housing, Iñaqui Carnicero; the president of the Superior Council of Architects of Spain (CSCAE), Marta Vall-llossera; and the director of the Arquia Foundation, Sol Candela.
The jury members have chosen the proposals taking into account "the diversity of contexts and scales of Ibero-American architecture," as well as those works capable of responding to the challenges posed by the Biennial.
The call has been promoted by the Ministry of Housing together with the Superior Council of Architects of Spain (CSCAE) and the Arquia Foundation.
The XIV BIAU has a curatorial team made up of architects from Brazil, Spain, and Portugal: Nuno Sampaio, Carlos Quintáns Eiras, Fernando Serapião, Matheus Seco Ferreira, Daniel Mangabeira da Vinha, and Luciana Saboia.
