The spokesperson for Industry of Sumar, Manuel Lago, has claimed this Tuesday in Congress that a maximum price for gasoline and diesel should be established in light of the "greed" of oil companies, which, he has emphasized, have obtained high profits in a context of strong inflation.
According to data from the National Institute of Statistics, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased its year-on-year rate by seven tenths in August, reaching 4.3%, the highest record since February 2023, driven by the rise in fuel prices.
In this scenario, Sumar has been proposing measures to curb the increase in the cost of living and, this Tuesday, taking advantage of a debate on an economic proposal from Podemos, Lago has defended a direct intervention by the State in the energy market.
"The Government has to intervene in the oil market by establishing a maximum price for gasoline and diesel, as we already do with the price of the butane cylinder," Lago stated during his speech in the Plenary of Congress.
The Galician deputy, who was an advisor to Minister Yolanda Díaz, detailed that this system of regulated prices aims to prevent the "greed" of large oil companies from resulting in greater impoverishment of the Spanish citizenry.
Likewise, he has proposed to act on the electricity market as well, recalling that the current cost of the megawatt hour exceeds 80 euros, more than double what was paid at the time of the imperialist aggression of the United States against Iran.
As he indicated, this situation has caused the wholesale electricity market price of the megawatt hour to exceed 250 euros in the periods where combined cycle plants, which use gas to produce electricity, have the greatest weight.
Maximum of 30 euros for gas intended for electricity generation
For this reason, Lago has defended setting a cap of 30 euros on the price of gas used in electricity generation, with the aim of lowering the electricity bill for households and businesses.
In the final part of his speech, the Sumar deputy denounced that, while inflation has been accelerating since the outbreak of the crisis in the Middle East, in just the first six months of 2026 Iberdrola, Endesa, and Naturgy "have earned more than 8 billion euros." In this sense, he has claimed the need to recover the specific tax on this sector.
