The Council of Ministers has given the green light this Tuesday to a royal decree-law that launches Summer Youth 2026, a program that will apply discounts of up to 90% on bus and train tickets for young people during the summer months.
Promoted by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, this will be the fourth edition of the initiative, aimed at people between 18 and 30 years old. The plan has a budget of 130 million euros with the aim of promoting the use of public transport among young people.
All young people with Spanish or foreign nationality and legal residence in Spain, born between January 1, 1996, and December 31, 2008, will be able to benefit. They will be entitled to discounts on bus and train tickets for trips between July 1 and September 30, 2026.
Summer Youth 2026 foresees discounts of 90% on regular bus services of state competence, as well as on conventional medium-distance trains and the metric gauge network.
Likewise, 50% reductions will be applied in three cases: simple Avant tickets; long-distance or high-speed commercial services of all railway operators, with a limit of 30 euros per ticket; and the 10-day Interrail Global Flexible pass within two months when purchased through Renfe, with the reduction calculated on the official Interrail fares.
Requirements and deadlines
To access these bonuses, it will be necessary to register on the Summer Youth website, a procedure that will be enabled “in the coming days”, according to the Ministry in a statement. Registration will be done with the DNI or NIE.
Once it is verified that the person meets the program's conditions, they will be provided with a personal and non-transferable code, which they must enter when purchasing discounted train and bus tickets or the Interrail pass on the websites of the different operators.
The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has stressed that “millions of young people were waiting for this news” and that it is probably “one of the public policies aimed at youth that has been best received in recent years”.
Transport places this measure alongside others already approved to cushion the impact of the rising cost of living derived from the Middle East crisis. The Department highlights the "record number of trips" achieved in the 2025 edition, with more than 6.87 million journeys by train and bus between July 1 and September 30, 2025, 30% more than the previous year, as well as the "record" number of users, which exceeded 1.55 million, an increase of 10%.
Altogether, the three previous editions have allowed approximately 4.08 million young people to make more than 16 million trips in the summer. "Reality has exceeded expectations," celebrates Puente.
