Técnicas Reunidas has communicated that the combined cycle power plant it was awarded last week in Canada, valued at 570 million euros, will supply electricity to a Meta data center.
This award represents the first contract that the Spanish engineering company is undertaking as part of its plan to enter the data center business for hyperscalers, identified as one of the company's key growth areas for the coming years.
The contract, awarded to a consortium led by the American company Aecon, includes the design and development of a 932 megawatt (MW) combined cycle gas power plant located in the province of Alberta.
The selected location has room for expansion up to a generation capacity of 1,864 MW, and the project includes preparation of the facility for carbon capture (CCR) from the outset, thus facilitating the future incorporation of this technology.
Among the tasks assigned to Técnicas Reunidas are the direction of engineering, the supply of balance of plant equipment, the integration of equipment provided by the client, and the supervision of the commissioning and startup of the entire plant.
Construction work will be carried out by Aecon, Técnicas Reunidas' local partner and one of North America's largest construction and infrastructure development firms. This contract follows an initial phase in which both companies had already provided engineering services, among others, for the preliminary stages of the project.
"The consortium tasked with the project combines Técnicas Reunidas' extensive international experience in developing large power generation facilities with Aecon's strong local presence and diversified construction capabilities," states the Spanish company, which estimates the plant's operational start date for the second half of 2030.
The contract was awarded by Greenlight Electricity Centre Limited Partnership, a company owned by Pembina Pipeline Corporation, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners, and Kineticor Asset Management.
