The general secretary of CCOO, Unai Sordo, expressed this Thursday his support for the candidacy of the second vice president and minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, to lead the International Labour Organization (ILO).
"It would be very relevant for a person of, let's say, progressive origin, who has a vision of labor policies and social dialogue that we largely share, to be able to reach that position," the union leader pointed out in an interview on RNE, in statements collected by Europa Press.
The leader of CCOO emphasized the relevance of the ILO as a reference body in the labor field and warned that "international trumpism is also trying to contaminate" this institution, which, in his opinion, makes it essential to strengthen it. In this context, he believes that the Spanish minister could contribute decisively to that objective.
"The leadership of the ILO is a framework of immense global significance and at a moment like this, in which any multilateral area is being undermined, in which we are witnessing an unprecedented reactionary offensive, strengthening the ILO would be very important and, in my opinion, Yolanda Díaz can play that role," Sordo stated.
The head of CCOO also stressed that the ILO is not merely a symbolic international forum, but a space where norms are agreed upon that must then be incorporated into the legislations of different States. "And many of its recommendations have ended up in the legislation of countries, not only in Spain but in other countries around the world," he emphasized.
