The Senate has urged to carry out a global improvement of the N-541 road in the section that runs through the Pontevedra municipality of Cerdedo Cotobade.
The initiative, registered by the BNG and modified with an amendment from the PP, was approved this afternoon in the Transport Committee of the Upper House. The PSOE opted for abstention after its proposed change was not incorporated.
The motion demands, among other aspects, actions on the road surface, reinforcement of lighting, and traffic calming measures.
Deputy Carme da Silva (BNG) criticized that this road, with a "late 19th-century layout," is "unfortunately enormously known" for road accidents, while the Ministry merely responds that "it does not have a section with a concentration of accidents."
The debated text included an amendment from the PSOE that was not accepted by the nationalist representative. The Canarian socialist senator Ramón Morales defended that the State "continues to invest" in this road, citing as an example a road surface rehabilitation project. He also stressed that, according to DGT data, the probability of an accident with victims occurring "is low" and that no sections with a concentration of accidents are detected.
In contrast, PP deputy Nidia Arévalo defended that her group has registered a "realistic" amendment given the "urgent" needs of this road. During her speech, she criticized that it is "a Canarian senator" who "has to talk about a road in Galicia," words she described as a "lamentable" intervention.
These statements prompted a protest from Morales, who recalled that he intervenes as the socialist spokesperson for Transport in the Senate with powers to address any State infrastructure, and therefore demanded "respect" from the PP. The committee chairman, the popular Jesús Julio Carnero, backed the socialist senator by stating: "You don't need to say that, because before being a spokesperson, you are a senator and can intervene defending a road in the Canary Islands or Galicia."
