A magnitude 3.8 earthquake shook this Thursday, August 13, the San Francisco Bay area, in California. The quake occurred at 8:30 a.m., local time, and had its epicenter in the East Bay, near the border between San Leandro and Oakland.
The movement was initially recorded with a magnitude of 4.1, but the United States Geological Survey (USGS) later revised the estimate to 3.8. The tremor was felt in San Francisco and at different points in the Bay area.
So far, no significant damage has been reported related to the earthquake. The main immediate confirmed effect occurred in the BART public transportation network, which temporarily reduced the speed of trains to conduct safety checks.
Where the epicenter of the San Francisco earthquake was
The epicenter has been located about four kilometers north of San Leandro, in Alameda County and very close to Oakland. The San Francisco Chronicle places the point less than two miles northeast of San Leandro, near the Oakland Zoo and Interstate 580.
The earthquake also occurred near the Hayward fault, one of the main seismic structures in the San Francisco Bay area.
The USGS rated the intensity of the shakes recorded in Oakland, San Leandro, and Alameda as light according to the modified Mercalli scale.
Two aftershocks after the earthquake
After the main movement, at least two aftershocks have been recorded in the same area.
Both occurred around 9:07 a.m. local time, just over half an hour after the first earthquake. The USGS attributed magnitudes of 3.0 and 2.8, respectively.
The main movement had initially been estimated at a magnitude of 4.1 before the U.S. agency adjusted its calculations to establish the magnitude of 3.8 reported later. Such revisions of earthquake parameters are common as more data from seismic stations is incorporated.
The earthquake causes delays in BART
The quake has also had consequences for public transportation in the San Francisco area.
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system reduced the speed of its trains to carry out safety inspections on the tracks after the earthquake. The measure generated delays at different points in the network that reached around 20 minutes.
The speed reduction was a preventive measure while the state of the infrastructure was checked.
No significant damages reported so far
The first available information does not report relevant damages caused by the earthquake. There is also no record in the consulted sources of victims related to the seismic movement.
The earthquake has been relatively moderate, but its proximity to very populated areas has made the shaking widely felt in the Bay Area, including San Francisco.
