At least one person has lost their life this Thursday in an airstrike carried out by Israel against a vehicle traveling on the road that connects the capital of Lebanon, Beirut, with the Syrian capital, Damascus, a route that has been closed following the bombing.
According to data released by the Lebanese state news agency NNA, the offensive took place on the Dahr al Baida road, in a mountainous area east of Beirut. The identity of the deceased has not yet been made public, and Israel has not issued any official statement on the operation.
The bombing occurs a few hours after the President of the United States, Donald Trump, indicated that "the two leaders" of Lebanon and Israel would hold a conversation this Thursday, following the agreement reached on Tuesday by the governments of both countries to continue talks aimed at ending the clashes between the Israeli army and the Shiite party-militia Hezbollah, which have been reignited since March 2.
Lebanon had repeatedly called on Israel to open a direct channel of dialogue, a proposal that was only accepted last Thursday by Netanyahu, who gave instructions to hold bilateral negotiations with Lebanon with the aim of establishing "peaceful relations" and cooperating to "dismantle" Hezbollah -- a demand also made by Beirut --. The Shiite formation refuses, however, to move forward in this direction as long as Israel does not first end its invasion of the country.
