The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD, for its initials in German) has emerged this Sunday as the most voted force in the regional elections of Saxony-Anhalt, although without gathering the necessary support to govern alone with an absolute majority.

According to the preliminary results provided by the electoral authorities of the state, the AfD has concentrated 43.8% of the ballots, more than double the support it received in 2021 (20.8%). This increase would translate into 39 of the 83 seats in the regional parliament.

The second position corresponds to the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which with 17.2% of the votes sees its support collapse to less than half of the 37.1% that gave it victory in 2021, which represents 19.9 points less. With this result, the CDU will have 15 deputies.

Behind are the historic Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the Greens, and The Left, which obtain 9.3%, 8.9%, and 8.6% of the votes, respectively, translating into 8 seats for each of these formations.

Finally, the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht manages to exceed by three tenths the minimum threshold of 5% required to access the parliament of Saxony-Anhalt, allowing it to enter the regional chamber.
