At least one person has lost their life and eleven others have been injured this Friday in a shooting registered in the city of Midland, in the state of Texas. The alleged author of the shots has died, according to local authorities in the United States.
"We have eleven confirmed victims so far. There is at least one victim who has died at the scene," Mayor Lori Blong declared at a press conference in which she conveyed that her "thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."
Later, on her social media, the mayor stated that "the shooting situation has concluded and the death of the author of the shots has been confirmed."
Nine of the injured have been evacuated to Midland Memorial Hospital: four of them had to undergo surgery, while the other five remain in stable condition, according to information provided by the health center to the network CBS News. According to NBC News, a tenth victim has been treated at Odessa Hospital.
On the other hand, the Midland Police Department has communicated through its social media that the area affected by the shooting "remains cordoned off and has not been cleared" and that nearby roads will remain closed "for a while as the investigation continues," while urging citizens not to travel through the restricted area.
Moments earlier, the police force had explained that its "officers heard shots coming" from a building in which the shooter had allegedly barricaded himself "and acted quickly to secure and clear the area." "Armored units were deployed and other agencies collaborated in the response," he added without offering further details about the operation.
