The European Commission has coordinated this Thursday with the Twenty-Seven the joint reaction to the disinformation linked to the migration crisis in Ceuta. In the meeting, Spain informed the rest of the community partners about the evolution of the situation in the autonomous city and both the measures already implemented and other possible actions in the digital environment were reviewed.
"The Commission will continue with intensive coordination with the platforms to stop the spread of misinformation and disinformation and combat the false promises spread by criminal networks," said the Vice President of the Community Executive for Technological Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen, after the meeting.
The meeting, held within the framework of the European Board of Digital Services, also served for the member States to "exchange opinions and assess Brussels' commitment" to the big tech companies, as well as "the measures taken so far, possible future actions, and the latest events."
"Combating illegal migration and protecting lives is a shared responsibility," defended the Finnish politician, who emphasized that work in this area "continues."
The meeting takes place after the Commission has intensified in recent days contacts with platforms like Meta and TikTok to curb disinformation related to the crisis in Ceuta, holding periodic meetings and daily communications with these companies.
Brussels claims that this cooperation is "bearing fruit" and that digital companies are acting against content linked to human trafficking, violence, incitement, and hate speech, in addition to trying to provide truthful information to users in certain searches to reduce the spread of false or misleading messages.
"What they convey to us is that this cooperation is proving to be very effective and that the platforms are taking action on this basis," had explained hours earlier the community spokesperson Guillaume Mercier, who indicated that monitoring remains "at the highest level" in the face of possible events that may occur at any moment.
