The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, has called this Monday for the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party to meet in an extraordinary plenary session. The objective of this session is to analyze proposals for change aimed at implementing structural reforms that advance the liberalization of the island's economy, according to the announcement made by the leader himself this Friday.
"On June 17, convened by the Political Bureau, the Extraordinary Plenary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba will meet to evaluate proposals for transformations that we recently announced in statements to the press," the head of the island's Executive stated in a message on social media.
This call is part of his intention to move forward with a package of structural reforms aimed at liberalizing the national economy, using the market economy models applied in China and Vietnam as a reference. With this, the Cuban government intends to mitigate the effects of the economic and energy sanctions imposed by the United States.
The initiatives proposed by the Cuban leader come after the increase in economic pressure on Cuba in recent months, driven by the Donald Trump administration, with the aim of forcing political and economic changes in the country. Pressure that, according to Díaz-Canel, "is having an impact that complicates the daily lives of Cubans."
