The authorities of Iraqi Kurdistan have reported that eight drones loaded with explosives were detected and shot down without causing injuries on Wednesday night over Erbil, the capital of the autonomous region.
According to the official statement, "tonight, Wednesday, July 15, 2026, between 8:53 PM and 9:20 PM (local time), Coalition forces intercepted and shot down eight explosive drones over Erbil," as detailed by the regional counter-terrorism authority, which stressed that, "fortunately, there were no casualties."
A local source consulted by the Iraqi agency Shafaq specified that up to three of these devices were shot down in the vicinity of the US consulate, hit by the air defense systems of the diplomatic mission itself.
According to this witness, "the shrapnel from the drones, after detonating in the air, fell on a taxi, causing material damage." Despite this, no personal injuries have been recorded, nor have any additional damages been reported in the area.
So far, the United States consulate in the Kurdish-Iraqi city has not issued any comment or public statement on what happened.
