The German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, stated this Tuesday that the federal government will only decide on the country's participation in a mission aimed at reinforcing security in the Strait of Hormuz when it has access to the details of the preliminary agreement reached between the United States and Iran. The content of this preliminary understanding could be made public starting this Friday, following a ceremony scheduled in Switzerland.
"We do not yet know this declaration of intent. It is expected to be published starting Friday," he declared, subsequently emphasizing Germany's willingness to be involved in demining efforts in the area. He recalled that Berlin has "economic and security interests" in this maritime route, considered strategic for international trade.
Wadephul insisted that the German contribution will only be possible if the appropriate conditions are met, and for this, he considers it essential to first know "what the agreement contains." "We must know if there is a general consensus for this demining to take place," he added, remarking that the decision will not be made without broad support.
Regarding the content of the preliminary agreement, the minister indicated that different versions are circulating, including that the document would be one or two pages long and would contain around 14 points. However, he avoided making a statement until he had the definitive text.
"First we have to read it. We have to understand it. We have to ask questions about it," he reiterated, after the delegations involved reached a memorandum of understanding following several weeks of talks. The parties are expected to proceed with the in-person and definitive signing of the text this Friday.
