The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, expressed this Sunday his doubts about possible leaks of information within the security services of the Islamic Republic, which would have allowed the initial bombing carried out by the United States and Israel on February 28 and which, he warned, continue to affect today the country's strategy.
In his statements, Araqchi specifically referred to the operation carried out that day by Israeli planes against Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran, an attack that ended with the death of the ayatollah, several members of his family, and a significant part of the Iranian military leadership during a meeting held at Khamenei's residence in the capital.
"The crucial question, from my point of view, is that (the United States and Israel) knew about those meetings. It points to a security failure that existed then, and probably persists now," the minister indicated in an interview with conservative activist Javad Moghayi, advanced by Iranian media and still to be published in its entirety.
"Because I believe they were aware that the supreme leader had meetings in his office every day," the minister continued. "They knew that one of his deepest personal principles is that he had no intention of hiding in a bunker, and they knew that at that moment the main commanders were meeting right next door, or two buildings away," he added.
Araqchi has been more reserved in suggesting that there are "influences" that are manipulating "the decision-making process" at a "psychological level," without offering further explanations considering that "nothing more can be commented on publicly regarding this."
