The Israeli Army has announced the start of an aerial offensive against the main stronghold of the Shiite party-militia Hezbollah in the south of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. The attacks are occurring in retaliation for the recent launch of projectiles against Israeli territory and take place at a moment of maximum tension in the talks between the United States and Iran, the main supporter of the Lebanese group, which had already warned that any military operation in the area would be intolerable.
"The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have attacked an infrastructure of the terrorist organization Hezbollah in Dayiha, Beirut," the Israeli Army reported on social media.
Tehran has explicitly made the signing of any pact with Washington conditional on the immediate cessation of Israeli bombings on Lebanese territory. However, the Dahiya neighborhood is considered a particularly sensitive target: on the one hand, it is an urban area with a high population density and, on the other, it constitutes the strategic core of operations for its main ally in Lebanon, practically a political and military extension of Iran in the country.
