The High Criminal Court of Bahrain has imposed life imprisonment on nine defendants and has sentenced two others to three years in prison for crimes linked to terrorism and espionage in coordination with Iran's Revolutionary Guard.
According to the Public Prosecution, those involved maintained links with said Iranian organization with the objective of "perpetrating hostile and terrorist actions against the kingdom of Bahrain" and against its national interests, according to information released by the official Bahraini agency BNA.
The court has also ordered the confiscation of materials and equipment seized as part of the investigation.
Among those convicted, one of them acted as a liaison with the Revolutionary Guard to recruit another of the accused, to whom he entrusted surveillance tasks and taking photographs of infrastructure spread throughout the country. This second accused registered in different hotels and sent the collected images and data to the first.
A third individual involved, employed in a currency exchange office, used Bahraini and Iranian bank accounts to receive funds from Iran and distribute them in dinars among other members of the group. Two other accused would have facilitated the movement of the surveillance operative without raising suspicions, despite knowing the "terrorist" nature of his activities.
In a separate case, another fugitive would have recruited up to four people within Bahrain to carry out observation and monitoring tasks for the benefit of the Revolutionary Guard.
