The Prime Minister of Moldova, Alexandru Munteanu, announced this Friday that he is stepping down, stating that he "cannot exercise his mandate" in accordance with his "principles and beliefs." Munteanu had assumed the head of government in November 2025, following the victory of the pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) in the legislative elections held in September of that same year.
"Today I am ending my term as Prime Minister. I accepted the proposal to be Prime Minister with great responsibility and the firm belief that I could contribute to improving things," Munteanu said. "Once I understood that I cannot exercise my mandate in line with the principles and beliefs I hold, I choose to leave," he stated, without offering further explanations about the specific reasons for his departure.
In his message, he expressed his gratitude to "all colleagues" for their "professional" and "good faith" work, and stressed that he "will continue to serve the country," "regardless of the responsibilities he holds, in the public or private sector," as reported in a statement disseminated on social media.
"I believe that duty to the nation is not linked to a position, but to the commitment we maintain," Munteanu emphasized, leaving office about eight months after his executive took office with the main objective of guiding the country towards accession to the European Union (EU) in 2028, after receiving Parliament's support.
PAS, the party of President Maia Sandu, won the parliamentary elections of September 28, 2025, with 50.2% of the votes, which gave them 55 out of the 101 seats in the Chamber, in a context marked by the Moldovan authorities' allegations of alleged Russian interference in the electoral process.
Before taking charge of the independent majority and technocratic executive, Munteanu pursued his career as a banker in Moldova and France and spent a decade working for the World Bank in Washington. He holds Moldovan, Romanian, and American citizenship, and resided for 20 years in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, before being appointed Prime Minister.
