The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, confirmed this Friday the release of a reservist from the Army who had been detained for eight months in Thailand, where he had traveled for his honeymoon. His release occurred after intense diplomatic efforts with the authorities of the Asian country.
"The Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, spoke this Friday with the reservist soldier A. and his family after his release following diplomatic efforts regarding his prolonged detention (eight months) during his honeymoon with his wife M. in Thailand," his office indicated in a statement.
According to the note, the head of the Government congratulated the couple on their return to Israel and conveyed his recognition to the soldier for "his prolonged service." "The State of Israel acted and will always act in favor of its citizens around the world," he added.
Netanyahu also expressed his gratitude to the coordinator of prisoners and missing persons, Gal Hirsch, for his role in the release of the reservist. He also extended his best wishes to the president, Isaac Herzog, to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gideon Saar, and to all members of the security forces who contributed to the soldier's return.
For the moment, Israeli authorities have not provided information about the identity of the reservist nor have they officially clarified the reasons for his arrest. However, several local media report that Thai security forces may have found a magazine with ammunition inside his luggage.
