The co-president of Nicaragua, Rosario Murillo, has announced the release of "more than 2,000" people deprived of liberty on the occasion of the 47th anniversary of the triumph of the Sandinista Revolution, an event that the country celebrates every July 19.
"On the Day of Joy, that day we will also be participating in the transfer for family convenience of more than 2,000 people who have been held in the National Penitentiary System," Murillo stated in remarks to the officialist press, disseminated by the newspaper 'La Prensa'.
The Nicaraguan leader detailed that the inmates will benefit from a "family coexistence" regime, which will allow them to return to their homes on that same date.
With this new measure, it will be the fourth release of prisoners ordered by the government of Daniel Ortega so far this year, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 6,400 people.
The previous mass release occurred on May 30, the day Nicaragua commemorates Mother's Day. On that occasion, the Ortega government reported the release of another 2,000 inmates under the same "family coexistence" regime.
