The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan has called this Wednesday for consultations with the chargé d'affaires of the United States in the country, Natalie Baker, to convey its displeasure over the statements made by the American ambassador in India regarding the disputed region of Kashmir during a recent visit.
According to the Pakistani diplomacy, in the meeting with Baker, a "strong protest" was presented regarding the remarks of the diplomat Sergio Gor, in the context of his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir as the United States ambassador in India.
In an official statement, Islamabad has pointed out that "Pakistan categorically rejected the designation of Jammu and Kashmir as 'part of India'," estimating that these statements are "objectively incorrect" and "irresponsible."
The text adds that "it was emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognized disputed territory, awaiting a definitive resolution in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people," while the Ministry has reminded the "long-standing and well-documented" position of Washington on this dispute between Islamabad and New Delhi.
For this reason, the Pakistani authorities have urged the Trump Administration to ensure that its public messages remain "consistent with the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir," although they have expressed their recognition of Donald Trump's offer of mediation to try to channel the conflict.
During his visit to the area, Gor stated that "this is an important part of India." "We just had a very productive meeting and we have some pending issues that we hope to address in Washington and Delhi. The meeting was very cordial and pleasant, and we hope to continue strengthening this relationship," he declared to the media after meeting in the city of Srinagar with the region's chief minister, Omar Abulá.
