The Prosecutor's Office of Poland has communicated this Thursday the arrest of a member of the Armed Forces accused of participating in alleged espionage activities for the intelligence services of Russia, a type of crime that, according to Polish authorities, has increased notably since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The soldier, identified as Jaroslaw K., was allegedly recruited by Russian services before officially joining the Polish Army in March 2024, according to information released by prosecutors and reported by the Polish television channel TVP. Once within the armed forces, he performed duties as a radio operator, with access to "restricted" information.
Over time, he began to arouse suspicion among his superiors due to the nature of his opinions, perceived as favorable to Russia and distant from the position held by the majority of Western countries regarding the war in Ukraine. The Prosecutor's Office has requested his provisional imprisonment due to the risk of flight, although the Justice system has determined that there are not enough indications for this measure at the moment.
The arrest took place in the city of Poznan during an operation by the Internal Security Agency, coordinated with the Polish military prosecutor's office, which maintains that the suspect allegedly "acted in favor of a foreign intelligence service." As a consequence of the investigation opened, the authorities have decided to suspend him from duty and salary until the judicial proceedings conclude.
