Swedish authorities announced this Wednesday the release of the captain of an oil tanker held in waters near the country, suspected of being part of Russia's so-called 'ghost fleet'. The man had been in custody since May and has now been released, according to authorities.
Although the case remains open, the captain, of Chinese nationality and named Jin Hui, is still being investigated for the alleged use of falsified documents related to the ship, according to information published by the newspaper 'Sweden Herald'.
"There are not sufficient grounds for him to remain detained, but the investigation is not over," stated prosecutor Agneta Roos. Before the arrest, the vessel was already under surveillance, after the Coast Guard launched several tracking operations to monitor its movements.
The Swedish Executive confirmed at the time that the oil tanker appeared on various sanctions lists linked to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including those drawn up by the United Kingdom and the European Union.
In parallel, the Stockholm government has reported that the cargo ship 'Caffa', suspected of participating in the illegal export of grain from Ukrainian areas occupied by Russia, has also been released and handed over to the Ukrainian authorities.
