The Syrian Petroleum Company reported this Friday that it has launched demining operations in the vicinity of the Conoco gas field, located in the Deir Ezzor governorate. These works are activated after Syrian forces retook control of this area last January, previously under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
"As part of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate damaged infrastructure, the personnel of the Syrian Oil Company, in cooperation with specialized geological disinfection teams, have begun to remove mines and war debris from the vicinity of the Conoco line in Deir Ezzor," it indicated in a statement disseminated on social media.
According to the company, the main purpose of these tasks is "to ensure the trajectory of the line", in addition to "guaranteeing the safety of technical personnel and their equipment". "This work is not only a maintenance task, but it embodies a true determination to bring back to life every corner of our national facilities", it has pointed out.
In parallel to the control of this strategic zone, the political and military map of the country changed drastically after the lightning offensive launched by the Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS) militia, headed by Ahmed al Shara --current transitional president of Syria and previously known as Abu Mohammad al Golani--. This operation, supported by various armed rebel groups, culminated with the capture of Damascus on December 8, 2024 and the ousting of then-president Bashar al Assad.
