The German Federal Prosecutor's Office in Hamburg on Wednesday filed charges against a Ukrainian citizen for his alleged involvement in the preparation of the attacks against the Nord Stream gas pipeline, according to his legal representatives to the German agency DPA.
The sabotage took place in September 2022 in the waters of the Baltic Sea, when up to six detonations were detected in the pipeline's infrastructure.
Investigations carried out in Germany conclude that the explosives would have been placed in four different sections of the pipelines, which initially led countries like Sweden and Germany to speak of four explosions, although it was finally confirmed that there were six.
The main hypothesis holds that several divers installed the explosive charges in the pipes after traveling to the area in a sailboat, in which remains of explosive material were found in July 2023. Aboard were five men and one woman, who allegedly rented the vessel using false documentation. The attack occurred in the midst of the war in Ukraine and, from the beginning, Moscow has distanced itself from the sabotage.
