The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has linked the possible adoption of new sanctions against Russian oil to the price set by the global energy market, in a context where the recent agreement with Iran could bring some calm to prices.
"We are watching how low the price of oil goes. It is plummeting," President Trump stated this Wednesday during the G7 summit held these days in the French town of Évian, according to CNN.
Since Trump announced at the beginning of this week that the United States had reached an understanding with Iran, the value of crude oil has registered notable declines, although it remains clearly above pre-war levels.
At the beginning of this year, the US administration was forced to relax some of the restrictions on Russian crude oil, following the sharp rise in energy prices resulting from the war it launched with Israel against Iran. These temporary waivers expire at the end of this week.
Within the framework of the G7 meeting, the leaders have issued a statement in which they reiterate their "unwavering support" for Ukraine amidst the war, and emphasize the importance of maintaining economic pressure on Russia through sanctions, especially on its oil and gas exports.
Trump, however, has refused to comment on the lack of negotiating will that the Ukrainian President, Volodimir Zelenski, attributes to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. "I don't want to comment on that because I'm trying to get it resolved, and that doesn't make it easier," he stated.
At the same time, the US leader has confirmed that his government is studying Ukraine's request to obtain the necessary licenses to produce Patriot missiles on its own territory, one of the most sought-after defense systems by Kyiv.
"They would like to be able to do it. We will study it," declared the President of the United States, one day after Zelenski expressed his confidence to the press that this project would move forward. "Trump supports this idea (...) I hope that when he gives a positive answer, it means yes," said the Ukrainian leader.
