The authorities of the United Kingdom have communicated this Tuesday that they will intensify their military support to Ukraine through a new package valued at 100 million pounds (about 116 million euros). This shipment will include air defense interceptors, large-caliber artillery shells, and drones.

The aid is framed within the virtual meeting of the Ukraine Contact Group taking place this Tuesday and will be articulated through NATO's Ukraine Priority Requirements List (PURL) initiative. Through this mechanism, European allies purchase U.S. military material that is subsequently transferred to Kiev.

The objective of this assistance is "to help Ukraine defend itself against the barbaric Russian attacks this winter," according to the British Ministry of Defense in a statement. London specifies that Patriot missiles and other air defense systems will be provided to safeguard critical infrastructure, the civilian population, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces against Russian attacks.

"Both the Prime Minister (Andy Burnham) and I clearly heard during our first visits to Kiev the importance of supporting Ukraine during this winter, as Russian President Vladimir Putin prepares to use winter as a weapon, continuing his barbaric attacks against civilian and energy targets," emphasized the British Defense Secretary, Wes Streeting, who highlighted that with this package, London fulfills its commitments.

The Ministry of Defense also highlighted that this announcement coincides with the delivery to Ukraine of the one millionth large-caliber artillery shell by the United Kingdom, emphasizing that this military aid is "vital" for the defense of Kiev against the Russian offensive. It also indicated that new military packages financed by Germany, Denmark, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden are expected, as part of coordinated efforts to maintain support for Ukraine on the front.

In an initial reaction, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude to the United Kingdom for this support, which he defined as a "winter package," and emphasized that it is a quick decision by Burnham's government following the Prime Minister's first visit to the country on August 24.

Zelenski has insisted that the top priority is to have more Patriot interceptors "in the face of the incessant attacks from Russia against critical infrastructure and against life itself."

"We also value our active cooperation in other areas: the production of Storm Shadow missiles in Ukraine, the joint work on drones and artificial intelligence, and much more," he pointed out, expressing his gratitude to Burnham and Streeting and highlighting that London "in many ways is leading the way" among Kiev's partners.
