The executives of Venezuela and Israel have communicated the implementation of a new mechanism to resume consular relations, after the visit to Venezuelan territory of an Israeli delegation due to the double seismic event recorded at the end of June. With this step, the stage of breaking diplomatic ties that had been maintained since 2009 begins to close.
"The two countries agree to establish a coordination mechanism that allows the provision of consular services to their respective citizens residing in the other country, as necessary," the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry has stated in an official note.
In the same text, Caracas emphasizes that "both governments recognize the importance of the link" between Israel and "the Jewish community residing in Venezuela," a bond that "constitutes an important historical bridge of friendship between both countries."
Likewise, the delegations have decided to "allow the continuity of bilateral technical cooperation derived from the emergency and recovery efforts after the double earthquake" of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 recorded on June 24 in the north of the country, a disaster that has caused 6,301 fatalities.
The Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar, has celebrated on social media that this initiative serves to "create an official coordination channel between Israel and Venezuela, which have not maintained diplomatic relations with each other since 2009."
"As will be remembered, a aid mission departed for Venezuela after the earthquakes that occurred there on June 24. The mission was led by the Foreign Ministry and the Rear Command, and provided professional assistance to the emergency and rehabilitation efforts in the country," Saar has recalled.
