The president of the People's Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has reiterated that his party was "right" to demand "more guarantees" and denounce a lack of "control" in the procedure provided for in the Historical Memory Law for granting nationality to descendants of political exiles, after the Central Electoral Board has demanded that it be "sufficiently motivated" in which province these new voters are registered.

"The census cannot be altered without sufficient motivation, without sufficient verification, and without sufficient oversight," stressed the PP leader during the presentation event of his party's candidate for the Mayoralty of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Poli Suárez. "We were right to question Sánchez's decency," he added.

In his speech, Feijóo emphasized that the truly irresponsible thing "is not to doubt the intentions" of the head of the Executive, but "not to do so after everything" that, in his opinion, he has been "capable of doing." Along these lines, he insisted that the PP will "continue to comply" with its "duty" to ensure that "there are guarantees" and "sufficient controls" in this process.

The Galician leader pointed out that his party will continue to demand "rigor" in the "compliance with the law" before granting a passport to any citizen, since, he said, "it is the most important document that Spain can give to any person in the world."

The JEC demands motivation for census registration

The Central Electoral Board has decided to ask the Electoral Census Office to prepare an instruction on the application of the so-called grandchildren's law, which allows descendants of exiles to obtain Spanish nationality. Furthermore, it anticipates that the determination of the electoral municipality in which each beneficiary of this provision of the Democratic Memory Law is registered must be "sufficiently motivated" when it does not coincide with their last domicile in Spain.

With this resolution, the arbitration body responds to the various requests received in recent weeks, in which concerns were raised about the way this route to nationality, in force since the end of 2022, is being applied.

"The determination of the municipality of electoral registration must be sufficiently motivated in the file when it does not result directly from the last residence in Spain, so that the concurrence of the applicable criteria can be verified and transparency, objectivity and equality in the formation of the electoral roll can be guaranteed," states the JEC agreement, as reported by Europa Press.
