The Secretary General of Podemos, Ione Belarra, announced this Saturday her willingness to lead her party's candidacy for the Community of Madrid in the 2027 regional elections.
The purple leader conveyed her proposal to the membership during a party event at the Círculo de Bellas Artesin Madrid, where she argued that the region will be one of the central political battles of the coming years.
A Candidacy Against Ayuso
Belarra has directly placed the Madrid president,Isabel Díaz Ayuso, at the center of her decision. The leader of Podemos considers that Madrid represents the ideological core of the Spanish right and that the left must put up a more forceful fight to contest the regional government.
In her speech, Belarra criticized the PSOE and Más Madrid, considering that both parties have given up on defeating Ayuso. In contrast, she has proposed a Podemos candidacy with the aim of politically confronting the PP's model in the region.
Madrid, a Key Square for Podemos
Belarra's decision carries strong symbolic weight for Podemos. The purple formation was left without representation in the Madrid Assembly in the 2023 regional elections, a particularly significant blow in one of the territories where the party had had the most prominence since its inception.
With this move, the Secretary General seeks to regain institutional presence in the Community of Madrid and rebuild Podemos's political space in a region dominated by Ayuso's PP.
The Precedent of Pablo Iglesias
Belarra's gesture is reminiscent of the move made byPablo Iglesiasin 2021, when he left the Vice Presidency of the Government to run in the Madrid regional elections.
At that time, Iglesias jumped into regional politics with the aim of preventing the parliamentary disappearance of Podemos in Madrid. Now, Belarra is trying to repeat a high-impact political operation, albeit in a more difficult context for the formation, after having been left out of the Assembly.
Belarra's candidacy is not just an electoral bet, but also an organic one. As the party's general secretary, her decision implies placing Podemos at the forefront of the Madrid battle and making the 2027 regional elections a strategic priority. The purple leader has argued that Madrid deserves a different government and has claimed the region's capacity to host and build a political alternative to the current model.

The announcement opens a new scenario within the Madrid left. Podemos will seek to rebuild itself with a candidacy led by its top leader, while the PSOE and Más Madrid will also have to define their strategies to try to dispute Ayuso's territorial hegemony.
