Movimiento Sumar has given the green light to a new roadmap with which it abandons its role as a "political umbrella" for different formations to define itself as a state force with its own personality, framed within eco-socialist laborism and the construction of a broad front endowed with common rules that provide "stability" to the progressive space after years of tensions.
The political-organizational paper, supported by 98.96% of the attendees at the assembly held this Saturday, concludes that the organization must leave behind the original hypothesis with which it was born, conceived as a coordination space between state and territorial forces, and establish "definitively" its own structure that can converge with others "in a tool capable of revalidating the progressive government in 2027".
The document interprets Yolanda Díaz's step aside as coordinator of Movimiento Sumar and her renunciation of leading the space electorally again as a commitment to transform the organization and facilitate new alliances. At the same time, it warns that this objective cannot be limited to "the umpteenth sum of political pieces and apparatuses".
Beyond the Sumar coalition
The party argues that the future broad front must guarantee a plurinational and progressive majority in Congress, go beyond what the Sumar coalition represented in the 2023 general elections, and open a new political cycle.
To this end, it proposes establishing common operating rules, democratic systems for selecting candidates, citizen-open registries, primaries to resolve disagreements, and clear procedures for developing a shared program among the different organizations.
Movimiento Sumar understands that these rules must serve to offer certainty after years of instability in the progressive space and demands that the future alliance ensure broad citizen participation, which is not reduced to pacts between party leaderships.
The paper dismisses turning unity into a political identity in itself and emphasizes that the success of the front will depend on its ability to articulate recognizable leadership, an attractive political line, and an internal space that is "trustworthy, calm, stable, healthy, pleasant, and attractive".
A laborist and eco-socialist profile
Within that front, Movimiento Sumar aims to contribute with its own stamp, defined as ecosocialist laborism or laborist ecosocialism, accompanied by a feminist and anti-racist orientation.
The text advocates for transforming the world of work, gaining time for life, democratizing the economy, and allowing the working class to have a voice in the country's economic decisions. Likewise, it defends green industrialization based on electrification and renewable energies that ensure decent jobs and wages.
The organization also proposes putting artificial intelligence and algorithms at the service of citizens, recognizing new labor rights linked to technological advances, and protecting digital sovereignty against the power of "techno-oligarchs."
Housing is another central axis of the plan. Sumar identifies it as one of the factors that most fuel precariousness and inequality and demands the intervention of public authorities in the market to guarantee it as a right and not as a mere speculative asset.
Participating in a New Left-Wing Government
The document argues that the future broad front must aim to be part of a new progressive Government and states that presence in the Council of Ministers is "essential to guide state policies."
At the same time, it admits that not all organizations that join the alliance will have to share that strategy, as long as they accept as legitimate that other forces do aim to enter the Executive.
Movimiento Sumar concludes that the experience of the last two coalition legislatures shows that the space needs "more strength both inside and outside" the Government to continue advancing in labor rights, housing, care, democratization of the State, and ecological transition.
More Territorial Autonomy and New Internal Structure
Internally, the party proposes evolving towards a confederal model in which the different territories can constitute themselves as organizations with their own legal personality and financial resources.
This process will be developed asymmetrically, depending on the degree of implementation of each territorial structure. Furthermore, leaderships must include representatives from the territories on a rotating basis, and a periodic mechanism for information, debate, and decision-making with the state leadership will be launched.
The proposal also includes the reform of the coordinating group to dedicate more time to strategic debates, the strengthening of sectoral spaces, and the creation of a Sumar Foundation aimed at preparing reports, conducting opinion polls, producing discourse, and organizing training and cultural activities.
Likewise, the "Sumar X2" project will be launched, with the objective of doubling the number of registered members and militants, and a network of "Popular Athenaeums" will be promoted, conceived as cultural spaces for meeting and participation open to civil society.
Alliances, youth, and a municipalist commitment
The organization wants to consolidate a stable political and electoral alliance with Verdes Equo, renew its cooperation with Comunes, and explore agreements adapted to the reality of territories such as Madrid, Aragon, Valencian Community, Extremadura, Asturias, and Andalusia.
The assembly has also given the green light to the creation of a Youth Space with legal personality, its own registers and statutes, autonomous spokespersons, and a presence at all territorial levels of Movimiento Sumar.
Among the proposals attributed to this youth space are voting at 16 years of age, a universal basic income for young people, the reduction of the working day to 32 hours, rent controls, the expansion of public housing stock, and free public transport.
With a view to the municipal elections of May 2027, the party intends to recover the spirit of the confluence candidacies that emerged in 2015 and promote projects open to parties, social movements, and citizens, with the goal of regaining local governments and positioning municipalism as one of the central pillars of its political strategy.
