The final of the 2026 World Cup between Spain and Argentina does not end with the last whistle. If the Spanish national team is crowned champion, a ceremony will begin featuring Rodri Hernández and it will also leave one of the most anticipated political images of the tournament: Donald Trump handing the Cup to the Spanish national team.
Rodri is listed as captain of Spain in the final and would therefore be the player responsible for receiving the trophy and lifting it in front of his teammates. The midfielder has started as a starter against Argentina with the armband, within the same eleven that defeated France in the semifinals.
Rodri would collect the Cup as captain of Spain
FIFA has established that the trophy will be handed to the captain of the winning team. In the case of Spain, that role corresponds to Rodri, who leads Luis de la Fuente's team in the final held at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
After receiving the champion medals, the Spanish players would go up to the awards platform. Rodri would be the last footballer to advance to the trophy, before returning with the rest of the squad and lifting the Cup.
Only an exceptional circumstance or a change in protocol would alter that sequence. Even if Rodri were substituted during the match and handed the armband to another player, he would still be the designated captain of the national team during the final.
Donald Trump would hand the Cup alongside Infantino
Donald Trump would appear at the climax of the ceremony. FIFA has confirmed that the President of the United States and the president of the organization, Gianni Infantino, will jointly present the trophy to the captain of the champion team.
This means that if Spain wins, Trump and Infantino would hand the Cup to Rodri. Then there would be the photograph of the Spanish captain with the trophy and the lifting alongside the entire squad.
Trump's presence also responds to the status of the United States as one of the three host countries of the World Cup, alongside Canada and Mexico. The U.S. president arrived at the stadium in the presidential helicopter and has taken a central place in the authorities' box.
When Pedro Sánchez would appear in the sequence
Pedro Sánchez does not have an official role assigned in the handing over of the Cup. The agenda of La Moncloa indicates that the President of the Government accompanies King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, the Princess of Asturias, and Infanta Sofía during the final.
His appearance would mainly occur in the images from the box: before the match, during the anthems, in the reactions to the goals, and after the final whistle. If Spain wins, the cameras will presumably look for his celebration alongside the Spanish delegation.
However, it is not announced that Sánchez will go down to the field or participate in the delivery of the medals or the trophy. The official information places Trump and Infantino as responsible for presenting the Cup to the champion.
Asked before the match about the fact that Trump delivers the trophy, Sánchez responded: "I care more about who receives it." A phrase that points directly to Rodri and the possibility that Spain achieves its second star.
When King Felipe VI would appear if Spain wins the World Cup
Felipe VI would have prominence after the final whistle, first from the authorities' box, where he would celebrate the title alongside Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, Infanta Sofía, and Pedro Sánchez. The Royal House has confirmed the attendance of the royal family at the final, but has not announced that the monarch will participate in the delivery of the Cup on the field.
The expected sequence if Spain wins the World Cup
FIFA has not published a complete minute-by-minute script, but the ceremony would presumably follow this order: end of the match, preparation of the stage, delivery of medals to Argentina, medals for the Spanish players, and presentation of the trophy to the captain.
At that moment, Trump and Infantino would appear on the platform. Rodri would collect the Cup, return alongside his teammates, and lift it as captain of the new world champion.
Sánchez would initially remain in the box alongside the royal family. He could later participate in the institutional greetings or congratulate the players, although that part of the ceremony has not been officially confirmed.
Spain seeks its second World Cup
Spain faces Argentina in the second World Cup final in its history. The national team won its first title in South Africa 2010, when Iker Casillas lifted the Cup after Andrés Iniesta's goal against the Netherlands.
Sixteen years later, Rodri occupies the captain's place. If Spain is crowned champion again, the last image of the World Cup will be that of the midfielder lifting the trophy that Donald Trump and Gianni Infantino will have handed to him.
