Las autoridades militares de Paraguay comunicaron el lunes que han eliminado a un integrante del grupo insurgente Ejército del Pueblo de Paraguay (EPP), quien participó en diversos asaltos y raptos, incluyendo el del exvicepresidente Óscar Denis. El enfrentamiento ocurrió en Canindeyú, ubicado en el noreste del país.
El insurgente, conocido como Rubén Darío López, alias ‘Loro’, era parte del círculo cercano del EPP y estuvo involucrado, además del rapto de Denis, en al menos dos ejecuciones en Concepción y San Pedro, ciudades centrales pero cercanas al lugar del deceso del guerrillero, de acuerdo con lo informado por las autoridades.

The National Police of Paraguay, also involved in the operations, noted a weakening in the guerrilla group. «From what we are now finding and with all the evidence that will be analyzed henceforth, it is apparent that the EPP has significantly slowed its strategic growth and positioning plans,» highlighted the head of the Anti-Kidnapping Department, Nimio Cardozo. His unit continues to gather information on the hostages taken by this organization.
Evidence and hopes for information on hostages
«At the site, we found things not seen in other camps, such as electricity, solar panels, indicating that our work was very detailed and specific,» detailed Cardozo. Among the seized items—written documents, tablets, and mobile phones—the police hope to find information on the hostages: Police officer Edelio Morínigo, kidnapped over eleven years ago; rancher Félix Urbieta, abducted over nine years ago, though reportedly executed in 2017; and former vice president Denis, taken by the EPP in 2020.
Almost five years after the events, Denis’s family remains without information about the politician. «We hope there is information about dad, we are in touch with the authorities and will continue to insist,» his daughter Beatriz told ‘La Nación’.
«He is a man who took my dad from us, who took our dad from us. What could you think of a man who takes a loved one from you and also profits from it, a sick elderly man?» she asked.
