The weather in Spain will take a turn this weekend with rain in the north and the peninsular east, a sharp drop in temperatures and possible snowfalls in mountain areas, according to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

The spokesperson for AEMET, Rubén del Campo, has explained that the passage of a front will cause precipitation in different areas of the country and the subsequent arrival of a cold air mass will make temperatures drop sharply on Saturday.

According to information disseminated by Europa Press, the maximums could be below 12 °C and even 10 °C in wide areas of the interior of the Peninsula.

Rains in the north, peninsular east and Balearic Islands

The precipitations will concentrate especially in:

  • Galicia
  • Cantabrian
  • Pyrenees
  • North of Castile and León
  • Catalonia
  • Balearic Islands

In some areas of the eastern peninsula and the Balearic Islands, showers could be locally strong and accompanied by storms or hail.

Possible snowfalls starting from 600 meters

The thermal descent will make the snow level drop during the weekend.

According to AEMET, snow could initially appear from 900 meters and occasionally dropping to 600 or 700 meters

This could cause snowfall in areas near the mountains of the eastern peninsula.

Strong swell in the north

The passage of the front will also bring intense northwest wind and a strong maritime storm.

The waves could reach more than five meters in the Cantabrian Sea and up to six meters in Galicia

Weather change next week

Starting Monday, the weather will tend to stabilize with the arrival of an anticyclone, which will reduce precipitation in most of the country.

The temperatures will rise progressively and on Tuesday a fully spring-like atmosphere could be registered, with values close to 25 °C in areas of Andalusia, Extremadura and the eastern Cantabrian region.
