The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz Canel, has announced in a televised appearance the release of 51 people "sentenced to deprivation of liberty", after the intermediation of the Vatican, who has historically maintained dialogues with the island regarding review processes and release of inmates.

Díaz Canel has confirmed that in recent times, Cuban officials have also held conversations with U.S. representatives "to seek through dialogue solutions to the differences that exist between the two nations".

The Cuban leader has insisted that these exchanges have been favored by international actors, who have always been willing to intervene to calm tempers.

"It is a very sensitive process that is approached with much discretion and sensitivity," Díaz Canel has insisted.

This move comes after a worsening of relations between both countries. The Trump administration has tightened sanctions and is pressuring CubaCuba to change its political system. Precisely, among the measures demanded to improve relations was the release of political prisoners.

Last February, Trump threatened Cuba with initiating a "friendly takeover" of the island: "They are a failed country"
