The death of Gemma Cuervo, one of the most recognized actresses of Spanish theater and television, has caused a wave of reactions in the world of culture and politics. The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, wanted to publicly bid farewell to the performer, highlighting her importance in the artistic history of the country.

In a message disseminated this Saturday, the head of the Executive defined Cuervo as “one of the most beloved and endearing actresses of our country,” recalling the affection that the public has shown her for decades.
The actress has passed away at 91 years old in Madrid, as confirmed by her family.

A key figure of Spanish theater and television

Gemma Cuervo developed an artistic career of more than six decades, becoming one of the great ladies of the Spanish scene.

Throughout his/her career, he/she participated in dozens of theatrical productions, working on classical and contemporary texts. Among the works he/she performed are titles by authors such as Federico García Lorca, Lope de Vega, Fernando de Rojas or Valle-Inclán

His theatrical career began in the late fifties after training at the Spanish University Theater, and he later worked in companies such as the one directed by José Tamayo.

From the classics to popular television

Although the theater was always her great passion, Gemma Cuervo achieved enormous popularity thanks to television.

In the sixties, he participated in numerous dramatic adaptations of the mythical program “Estudio 1”, which brought theater to millions of Spanish homes.

Decades later, her face became very popular again among the general public thanks to television comedy.
Her character of Vicenta in “Aquí no hay quien viva” made her a very beloved figure for several generations of viewers.
