Civil Protection of the Generalitat has activated the Procicat plan alert due to the strong maritime storm forecast for this Sunday on the Costa Brava, in an episode that will coincide with the start of Holy Week and that requires extreme caution.

Maritime storm with waves of more than 2.5 meters

The regions of the Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà and La Selva (Girona) will be the most affected by an episode of strong swell, with waves that could exceed 2.5 meters in height, driven by north component wind and swell.

Civil Protection warns that the situation will be especially complicated in points such as the Cap de Creus and the Cap de Begur, where the impact of the storm could be more intense and extend until Monday at noon.

Strong wind throughout Catalonia

In parallel, the Ventcat plan remains activated due to wind risk, with a forecast of gusts that could exceed 90 kilometers per hour in wide areas of the territory.

The wind will generally affect all of Catalonia, although with greater intensity in the north and east, where a greater impact is expected both in coastal areas and inland.

Snowfalls in the Pyrenees and risk of blizzard

The meteorological episode will also affect the mountain. Between Saturday night and Sunday night, snowfalls are expected in the north of the Pyrenees, with accumulations that could exceed 10 centimeters from 900 meters.

The most affected areas will be the Vall d’Aran and the north of Alta Ribagorça and Pallars Sobirà (Lleida). In addition, the wind could cause phenomena such as blizzard and transported snow, which has led to activating the pre-alert of the Neucat plan.

Call for prudence in the midst of Holy Week

Given this scenario, Civil Protection has asked for “much prudence” in movements and outdoor activities, especially in a period of high mobility like Holy Week.

The authorities recommend following the indications of the Catalan Traffic Service and taking extreme precautions both on the road and in urban areas, where the wind can cause the fall of objects.

On the coast, the warning is clear: avoid breakwaters, promenades, and coastal paths, given the risk posed by the strong swell.
