Democrat consolidates its next phase which successfully began last May by strengthening its newsroom. After the opening of its correspondent office in Brussels, the launch of the comprehensive redesign and the strengthening of the editorial and commercial structure, the media outlet positions itself as the great reference in parliamentary, regulatory, and public policy information at a decisive moment for Spain and for Europe.

The redesign incorporates new analysis tools, an optimized architecture for greater thematic depth, and an editorial organization designed to grow in influence, specialization, and territorial capacity.

New editorial structure

  • David Córdova, president-editor: Doctor in Constitutional Law, with a doctoral thesis focused on the transparency of interests in public decisions. He holds a degree in Journalism and in Political Science and Administration, with a master's degree (DEA) in Parliamentary Law and holds a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy. In March 2023, he founded Demócrata, the first Spanish media outlet specialized in parliamentary information, inspired by his career in the field of public policies, Spanish and European regulation, his knowledge of business sector activity and his time in the institutions of Washington and Brussels.

The address of the newsroom is configured as follows:

  • Adrián Lardiez, Director of Parliamentary Information: Journalist specialized in political information with a Master's in Democratic Leadership and Political Communication. He was a parliamentary correspondent for seven years at ElPlural.com. He took his first journalistic steps at Libertad FM and from Buenos Aires (Argentina), where he began his academic research on the phenomenon of populism. A journey that culminated in the publication of his book ‘The Seduction of the Far Right: an essay on electoral behavior and the psychology behind the populist vote’. He has collaborated with channels such as laSexta, EiTB, TV3 and Cuatro.
  • Carmen Obregón, Director of National and Territorial Politics: Graduated in Information Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid, she began her professional career in the newspapers El Día de Ciudad Real and La Tribuna, from where she made a leap to Madrid to work with Luis María Anson at El Imparcial as a parliamentary correspondent and responsible for political issues. She swapped politics for economics and took charge of the weekends at elEconomista.es and, from there, to the Economy section, where she spent fifteen years. For the last three, she has been responsible for the Macroeconomics area at The Objective
  • Antonio Pérez, Head of Current Affairs: Graduated in Information Sciences. Founding partner of the group of hyperlocal newspapers Somos and director of them for more than a decade. He worked in the newsrooms of elPeriódico.com, elEconomista.es (weekend editor of the digital edition), ADN.es and Terra.
  • Álex Moreno, Head of Economic Information: He took his first steps in local information in the Community of Madrid. First at Europa Press and later at CTXT. Years later, he returned to Europa Press to cover economic information in Congress.

Furthermore, the newsroom has a correspondent's office in Brussels led by Álvaro Villarroel and the editor Lucía Gutiérrez will be responsible for the area of development of new formats and digital narratives.

This structure allows for more specialized coverage of legislative information and public policies, of the action of the Central Government and autonomous governments, of the economic and social agenda, and of European politics, consolidating an editorial model based on anticipation, analysis, and depth from neutrality and technical legitimacy.

Pilar Velasco starts a new stage

The journalist Pilar Velasco leaves the direction of Demócrata after completing the initial phase of the project.

David Córdova, president-editor, has highlighted that “Pilar has been co-founder and promoter of the original project. Although she is now undertaking new projects, she will always have a space in this house and will have a special recognition among us for her commitment and dedication to the consolidation of the medium.”

Commercial reinforcement

As a result of sustained growth in audience and revenue, the commercial area also expands with the incorporation of David Grijalba as Chief Revenue Officer (CRO), with the aim of consolidating new business lines, strategic alliances, and specialized editorial products. He has experience in various media outlets such as El Pais, El Confidencial, Yahoo, El Economista, currently specializing in Programmatic and Data.

A relaunch of success

The renewed impetus that Demócrata has undertaken under the direction of Manuel Bonachela as CEO, has allowed it to touch the barrier of 700,000 specialized readers, in nine months with a highly qualified profile and linked to the institutional, business, and regulatory spheres.

The medium has positioned itself as a reference platform for public decision-makers, executives, sectors and employers' associations, strategic companies and actors with a presence in Brussels, with a differential focus on deciphering agendas, anticipating regulatory movements and connecting politics and economy in a key of real influence.

This growth confirms the solidity of the editorial and commercial model of Demócrata, which is now preparing its thematic and territorial expansion with the aim of becoming an essential information hub for those who need to understand -and anticipate- political and economic power in Spain and Europe.
