The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, has denounced the climate of tension surrounding artificial intelligence after the attack with a Molotov cocktail against his home in San Francisco, which occurred in the early hours of Friday.

The incident, which left no injuries, has been interpreted by the executive as a sign of the increase in public hostility towards the development of these technologies.

An attack without victims and a suspect detained

According to the San Francisco Police Department, a 20-year-old man threw an incendiary device against Altman's home shortly after 4:00 AM before fleeing the scene. The device hit the facade, but did not cause personal injury.

Just an hour later, authorities received a report of fire threats at OpenAI's headquarters, located in the same city. The suspect was detained at that moment and linked to both incidents.

Altman breaks his silence

After what happened, Altman has published a message on his personal blog in which he reflects on the episode and the context in which it occurs. The executive, who usually keeps his private life out of the media spotlight, shared an image of his family with the aim of humanizing his figure.

“Images have power. I hope this deters the next person from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our house,” he wrote, in direct reference to the attack.

The role of public discourse

In his reflection, Altman has also pointed out the impact of public and media discourse on technology. According to the executive, the attack comes after the recent publication of critical content towards his figure.

“I underestimated the power of words and stories,” he affirmed, pointing to a growing climate of social anxiety around artificial intelligence.

Criticisms, fear and technological responsibility

The CEO of OpenAI recognized that part of the criticisms of the tech sector respond to legitimate concerns. “There is a real concern about the risks of this technology, and it is absolutely correct,” he stated.

At the same time, defended artificial intelligence as a tool capable of expanding human potential, although emphasized the need to manage it responsibly and avoid its concentration in few hands.

Call to lower the tension

Altman concluded his message with a call to reduce the verbal escalation in the debate about AI. “We must try to reduce explosions in fewer homes, both figuratively and literally,” he pointed out.

The episode highlights the growing level of polarization around technological development, at a time when artificial intelligence has become one of the central axes of the global debate.
